Built by the Portuguese in 1588 and massively expanded by the Dutch in the 17th century, Galle Fort is South Asia’s best-preserved colonial sea fortification — and an atmospheric living town within its walls. It is not a ruin; it is a neighbourhood of painted houses, bougainvillea-draped laneways, independent boutiques, and outstanding cafés, all enclosed within formidable stone ramparts that jut into the Indian Ocean. This full-day guided tour takes you deep into the Fort’s history and daily life: through Dutch colonial buildings, into ancient churches, past the lighthouse and harbour, finishing with a leisurely walk along the ramparts at golden hour.
