Kandy City Tour

Morning — Temple of the Tooth Relic Your guide collects you from your hotel and heads first to Dalada Maligawa — the Temple of the Tooth Relic. Arrive in time for the 9:30 AM puja ceremony, when the inner shrine is opened and pilgrims and visitors gather in the great hall as drums fill the air. Your guide explains the history and significance of the relic, the architecture of the complex, and the ceremonial traditions that have continued unbroken for centuries. Allow 60–75 minutes here.

Mid-Morning — Kandy Lake Step outside the temple precinct and follow the lakeside path that traces the perimeter of Kandy Lake. Built by Sri Vikrama Rajasinha, the last king of Kandy, this man-made lake creates a serene reflecting pool in the heart of the city. The path passes the historic Audience Hall, the royal bathing enclosure, and several viewpoints across to the temple roofline — among the most photographed scenes in Sri Lanka.

Late Morning — Udawatta Kele Sanctuary Climb above the royal palace into Udawatta Kele — a protected forest reserve that has served as a meditation retreat for monks and a buffer zone for the royal precinct since antiquity. The canopy is alive with endemic birds, giant squirrels, and troops of toque macaques. The walk takes 30–45 minutes depending on the route chosen.

Midday — Lunch Descend back into Kandy for lunch at a local restaurant of your choice. Your guide can recommend spots serving authentic Kandyan rice and curry, or lighter international options if preferred. Lunch is at your own expense.

Afternoon — Kandy Market & Craft Village Spend the afternoon in Kandy's commercial heart. Begin at the central market — a sensory riot of spices, tropical fruits, dried fish, and fresh flowers. Then visit the Arts & Crafts Village, where you can watch artisans at work on batik fabric, lacquerware, brasswork, and handloom textiles — and purchase directly from the makers. A final stop at a government gem emporium for those interested in Ceylon sapphires, rubies, or cat's eye chrysoberyls.

Late Afternoon — Return Hotel Transfer Your driver returns you to your Kandy hotel as the city settles into its quieter evening rhythm. The optional Kandyan dance show begins at approximately 5:30 PM nearby if you wish to extend your cultural day.
