Mist, Mountains & Wilderness — Hiking the UNESCO Knuckles Cloud Forest

The Knuckles Mountain Range takes its name from the clenched silhouette it presents when seen from Kandy’s valley floor — five knuckle-shaped peaks rising above the eastern hill country, perpetually wreathed in cloud. It is one of Sri Lanka’s most extraordinary natural landscapes, and one of the least visited by international travellers — which is precisely what makes it so special.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, the Knuckles Conservation Forest is a cloud forest of the first order: dense, wet, loud with birds, and layered with endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. Over 34 species of birds are endemic to Sri Lanka, and many of the rarest are found specifically in this misty highland environment. Leopards, sambar deer, giant squirrels, and porcupines inhabit the deeper reaches. Wild orchids grow from the bark of ancient trees. Waterfalls appear without warning around bends in the trail.

This full-day hiking tour from Kandy enters the range via Corbett’s Gap — a wind-battered saddle at 1,000 metres where the views open dramatically in both directions — and traverses trails that lead to Mini World’s End, a clifftop viewpoint that drops away into the valley far below with the kind of vertigo-inducing beauty that justifies every uphill step. The route descends via valley trails to Meemure: a village of roughly 200 people, reachable by a single mountain road, where traditional Vedda-influenced culture, agriculture, and a way of life largely unchanged for generations can be glimpsed on a respectful, guided visit.

Your expert hiking guide is a trained naturalist with deep knowledge of the range’s ecology, bird calls, trail conditions, and hidden highlights. This is a day for adventurous travellers who want to experience the Sri Lanka that exists beyond the tourist circuit.
