The Pilgrim's Island — Where the Buddha Walked and Two Faiths Share Sacred Ground

There is a small island in the Jaffna Lagoon — barely 400 metres across at its widest — that contains within its boundaries one of the most remarkable concentrations of spiritual significance in all of South Asia. The island is called Nagadeepa in Sinhala and Nainativu in Tamil, and it has been a place of pilgrimage for both Buddhists and Hindus for more than two thousand years. On one end of the island stands the Nagadeepa Purana Vihara — a Theravada Buddhist temple. On the other stands the Nagapoosani Amman Kovil — a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Parvati. Between them, a handful of resident families, some coconut palms, and the lagoon on every side.

The Buddhist temple’s origin claim is extraordinary. According to the Mahavamsa — the ancient Pali chronicle of Sri Lankan history, one of the most important historical texts in the Buddhist world — the Gautama Buddha made three visits to the island of Lanka during his lifetime. The second of these visits brought him specifically to Nagadeepa, where two naga kings were engaged in a territorial dispute. The Buddha resolved the conflict and established peace, and a temple was built to mark the spot of his visit. Whether one accepts this as literal history or as sacred narrative, the effect is the same: Nagadeepa has been a place of Buddhist pilgrimage of the highest order since the earliest centuries of the religion’s arrival in Sri Lanka.

The Hindu temple’s claim to the island is equally ancient. The Nagapoosani Amman Kovil is believed to date to a time before the Buddhist temple, and it draws pilgrims from across Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu in south India for whom the island is a major destination on the sacred geography of the Tamil Hindu world. On full moon days, hundreds of boats converge on the island from every direction.

The boat journey to Nagadeepa — from the jetty at Kurikadduwan on the island chain south of Jaffna — crosses water so shallow and clear it seems possible to walk on it. The island, when it appears on the horizon, is small and green and exact — a place of unmistakable purpose, visible long before you arrive.

This half-day pilgrimage tour is profoundly moving for visitors of every background. Come with curiosity and appropriate dress. Leave with something harder to name.
