147 Acres of Living Wonder — The Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya
Peradeniya Botanical Gardens occupy a privileged bend of the Mahaweli River, just minutes from Kandy city, and they have been astonishing visitors since the British established them as a formal botanical institution in 1821. But the land itself has an older, more royal story: these grounds were once a pleasure garden for the Kandyan kings, a retreat from the court set among the hills and rivers of the central highlands.
Today, the 147-acre gardens shelter one of the most diverse collections of tropical plantlife in the world. The Avenue of Royal Palms — a 400-metre double colonnade of towering Roystonea regia palms — is one of the most photographed natural corridors in Sri Lanka, its formal symmetry both dramatic and calming. The Orchid House holds over 300 varieties in continuous bloom, their colours and forms almost impossible to believe. The spice garden reads like the ingredient list of every Sri Lankan curry — living cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, vanilla, cardamom, and pepper, all growing in the same space.
And then there is the Java Fig: a single Ficus benjamina specimen planted in 1887 whose canopy has expanded over more than half an acre, its aerial roots forming a small forest of their own. Giant fruit bats hang in its upper branches by day, launching at dusk in numbers that darken the sky.
This half-day tour is unhurried, beautiful, and endlessly interesting — suitable for all ages, from committed botanists to children who simply want to see trees that look like something from a fairy tale.
