What times are the river baths?

The herd walks to the river at approximately 10:00 AM and again at 2:00 PM each day. We time your visit to include at least one — and ideally both — river bath sessions.

Can I touch or ride the elephants?

Visitors can feed and gently interact with younger elephants during designated feeding sessions. Elephant riding is not offered at Pinnawala and is not an activity Bell Ceylon Tours supports on ethical grounds.

How many elephants will we see?

Pinnawala currently houses over 80 elephants of all ages and sizes, including calves. The entire herd participates in the river baths.

Is it suitable for families with young children?

Very much so — Pinnawala is one of Sri Lanka's most family-friendly experiences. Children are typically entranced, and the pace of the visit is relaxed and safe.

The World's Largest Captive Elephant Herd — Up Close at Pinnawala

In 1975, a small group of orphaned and injured wild elephants were brought together near the village of Pinnawala on the banks of the Maha Oya River. What began as an emergency conservation measure has grown into one of the world’s most celebrated wildlife sanctuaries: today, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is home to over 80 elephants — the largest captive herd on the planet — including multiple generations of elephants born at the orphanage itself.

The daily rhythm of Pinnawala revolves around the river. Twice a day, at around 10 AM and 2 PM, the entire herd makes the short walk from the orphanage grounds to the Maha Oya, where they spend an hour bathing, splashing, and playing with an evident and infectious joy. Babies roll in the shallows. Older bulls shoulder their way to deeper water. Mahouts stand alongside, and visitors line the riverbank for what is — by any measure — one of the most joyful wildlife spectacles in South Asia.

Between the river baths, feeding sessions allow visitors to hand bananas directly to the younger elephants, who approach with a trust and gentleness that is deeply moving. Your guide provides context on each elephant’s history — many have names, known stories, and individual personalities that the mahouts know intimately.

The drive from Kandy to Pinnawala passes through some of the most beautiful countryside in the hill country, and the tour includes a stop at a traditional Kegalle spice garden where you’ll taste freshly harvested cinnamon, sample medicinal herbal preparations, and see the raw materials of Sri Lankan cooking growing in their natural form.

Day 01 :

Feeding, River Baths & Spice Gardens — A Full Day with the Elephants

Morning — Hotel Pickup & Drive to Kegalle Your guide collects you from your Kandy hotel after breakfast and heads west through the hill country towards Kegalle. The drive takes you through terraced rubber estates, coconut plantations, and small farming villages that give a vivid sense of rural Sri Lankan life.

Mid-Morning — Kegalle Spice Garden Stop at a traditional working spice garden in the Kegalle district. A local guide walks you through the garden, identifying cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, cardamom, pepper, and medicinal herbs. You'll taste fresh cinnamon bark, smell raw nutmeg, and learn about the centuries-old spice trade that made Sri Lanka famous across the ancient world. The garden shop sells high-quality spices and herbal products directly.

Late Morning — Arrive at Pinnawala & Morning River Bath Arrive at Pinnawala in time for the 10 AM river bath. Watch the herd make its way down the road to the Maha Oya — a procession that is remarkable in itself — and then gather on the riverbank as the elephants enter the water. Your guide provides commentary on individual elephants, the orphanage's history, and conservation context. This is typically a 45–60 minute session.

Midday — Elephant Feeding & Orphanage Grounds Return to the orphanage grounds where the younger elephants are fed. Participate in feeding sessions and observe the calves — many born at Pinnawala — at close range. Your guide explains the orphanage's veterinary programme and the long-term ambition to reintegrate suitable elephants into the wild.

Lunch Take lunch at one of the restaurants near the orphanage that overlooks the river. Many have outdoor terraces with views of the elephants still visible in the water. Lunch is at your own expense.

Afternoon — Afternoon River Bath (2 PM) Return to the riverbank for the afternoon bath — a second chance to photograph and observe the herd in the water as the afternoon light softens and the pace becomes even more relaxed.

Late Afternoon — Return to Kandy Your driver returns you to your Kandy hotel as the day cools, arriving in the early evening after a full, rewarding day.
