Sri Lanka's Wildest Safari — Leopards & Ancient Waterholes in Wilpattu

Wilpattu National Park occupies a sweeping expanse of the north-western lowlands — 1,317 square kilometres of dry-zone jungle, ancient sandy plains, and the extraordinary geological formations known as villus: shallow, naturally formed lake basins unique to this park, created by rainwater trapped in depressions in the ancient coastal plain. There are over 60 villus within Wilpattu, and they are the park’s defining feature and its greatest wildlife magnet. At sunrise and sunset, they attract extraordinary concentrations of animals and birds to their edges — the flat, open water creating clear sightlines that make wildlife viewing and photography here unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka.

Wilpattu is Sri Lanka’s oldest national park, first protected as far back as 1905, and its largest. For decades it was also largely closed to visitors due to the civil conflict in the north, and this enforced rest allowed the ecosystem to recover and mature in ways that now make it exceptional. Today, Wilpattu’s leopard population is among the healthiest on the island — comparable in density to Yala but observed in the context of far fewer tourist jeeps, meaning encounters are quieter, longer, and more natural. Sloth bears are seen here with greater regularity than at most other parks in Sri Lanka. Elephant herds move between the villus in the early morning. Mugger crocodiles bask on the banks.

For serious wildlife photographers and travellers who want genuine wilderness rather than a crowded safari circuit, Wilpattu consistently delivers something Yala cannot: solitude. The ability to sit beside a villu at dawn with a leopard at the waterline and no other vehicle in sight is an experience that stays with you.

Your naturalist guide is a Wilpattu specialist, familiar with the park’s seasonal rhythms, active leopard territories, and the villu circuits that yield the most productive wildlife hours.
